Halloween in Bali: What Really Happens, and Where to Stay in Ubud

Halloween in Bali is a strange thing to search for, because the island has no tradition of it at all. Bali is predominantly Hindu, and 31 October is an ordinary day on the Balinese calendar.

And yet every year the island fills with pumpkins, face paint and queues outside beach clubs. So what is actually going on, and where should you stay if you are arriving in Bali at the end of October?

Here is an honest answer, from a villa estate in Ubud that sits well away from all of it.

Does Bali Celebrate Halloween?

Not culturally. There is no Balinese Halloween ritual, no local holiday, and no public holiday on 31 October.

What exists instead is a hospitality version of Halloween, built almost entirely for visitors and for Bali’s large expat community. Bars, beach clubs, restaurants and some international schools run themed nights. Supermarkets in the tourist areas stock costumes for a few weeks. Then it disappears again on 1 November.

So the honest summary is this. Bali does not celebrate Halloween. Bali hosts Halloween.

Where Halloween Actually Happens in Bali

If you want the party version, it is concentrated in the south and the west coast.

Area What to expect
Seminyak Restaurant and bar themed nights, more polished, mixed crowd
Canggu and Berawa The biggest costume crowd, late nights, heavily expat
Kuta and Legian Loudest and youngest, street level bars
Ubud Very little. A handful of cafes and a few family events

Ubud is the quiet one on purpose. The town centre is built around temples, art and wellness rather than nightlife, and the village banjar system keeps late night noise in check. If you are reading this because you want Halloween, head south. If you are reading this because you are arriving at the end of October and want to know what you are walking into, Ubud is the calm answer.

The Balinese Version of the Same Idea

Here is the part most Halloween guides miss. Bali has its own traditions around spirits and the dead, and they are far more interesting than a costume party.

Ogoh ogoh. On the night before Nyepi, Bali’s Day of Silence, each village parades a huge demonic effigy built over weeks from bamboo and paper. The figures are deliberately monstrous. They are carried through the streets, spun at crossroads to confuse the spirits, then burned. Nyepi falls on 8 March 2027, with the ogoh ogoh parade the evening before.

Galungan and Kuningan. Balinese Hindus believe ancestral spirits return to visit their family homes during Galungan, and depart again ten days later at Kuningan. Every street is lined with penjor, tall curved bamboo poles decorated with palm leaf and rice. The next Galungan falls on 13 January 2027, with Kuningan on 23 January 2027.

If what draws you to Halloween is the idea of a night when the boundary between the living and the dead gets thin, these are the Balinese answers, and they are genuine rather than imported.

Late October Weather in Bali

End of October sits at the turn between the dry season and the wet season. In practice that means warm days, higher humidity, and short heavy afternoon showers that usually clear within an hour.

It is one of the better value windows of the year. Rates have not yet reached the December peak, the island is noticeably less crowded than July and August, and Ubud’s rice terraces and river valleys look at their greenest.

Pack light clothing, one layer for the evenings, and proper shoes if you plan to walk the Campuhan Ridge trail.

Halloween With Children: Why Families Choose Ubud

For families, the south coast version of Halloween is not really built for children. Most of the events are bar events running late into the night.

The alternative is to make your own version at the villa. A private estate gives you the space to do it properly:

  • A costume dinner cooked by your private chef, with the kitchen team matching the menu to the theme

  • A torch lit treasure hunt through the gardens after dark

  • A film night projected outdoors once the children are in pyjamas

  • A late swim, since the pools are heated and comfortable in the evening

None of that requires leaving the property, and nobody has to drive home at midnight.

Rumah Hujan Estate at the End of October

Rumah Hujan Estate is a private two villa estate in Ubud, about 2.5 km from the town centre and set back from the main road, with 2,400 sqm of jungle gardens looking across the Wos river towards Campuhan Ridge.

Space Details
Rumah Hujan villa 300 sqm, 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms
Rumah Senja villa 375 sqm, 3 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms
Badminton pavilion 200 sqm, bamboo roof created with Studio Jenquel and Ibuku
Pools 2 heated, mild saltwater pools, 12 to 13 m by 4 m
Grounds 2,400 sqm of jungle gardens facing Campuhan Ridge

The two villas work differently depending on who you are travelling with. Rumah Hujan is the warmer and more enclosed of the two, which suits families with younger children. Rumah Senja is larger, with an extra bathroom and a more open layout towards the valley, which suits two couples travelling together or a family that wants the main living space to be the centre of the stay.

Take both and you have six bedrooms, two pools and the pavilion as one private property, which is the usual arrangement for groups travelling together over a holiday period.

A full time team of housekeepers, private cooks and security looks after the estate. Drivers, massage therapists, yoga and swimming instructors, badminton coaches and nannies can be arranged through the services team.

A Simple Plan for 30 October to 2 November

Day Plan
30 Oct Arrive, settle in, dinner cooked at the villa
31 Oct Campuhan Ridge walk in the early morning, afternoon by the pool, costume dinner and treasure hunt after dark
1 Nov Ubud market and art galleries, late swim, local recommendations
2 Nov Slow morning, badminton in the pavilion, spa treatment at the villa

Plan Your Stay

Halloween in Bali is whatever you decide to make of it. You can drive south and join the crowd, or you can stay in a jungle valley in Ubud and keep the evening to your own family.
