ARTISTS & CREATIVES

A house that has always welcomed makers

Rumah Hujan was built by an architect with paint under his fingernails and a team of craftsmen who worked by hand. From the beginning, it has been a place where people who make things feel at home.

The artists in residence programme grew naturally from that — an open invitation to photographers, painters, filmmakers, material researchers, ceramicists, and writers to live and work within the estate, to move through Bali at their own pace, and to leave something of themselves behind. Each residency is different. Some are solitary and quiet. Some are collaborative. All are guided by the same principle that shaped the house — that the best creative work happens when you slow down, pay attention, and let a place speak.

Much of what is created here remains. Paintings hang in the villas. Sculptures stand in the gardens. Ceramics sit on shelves alongside everyday objects. Rumah Hujan is a living space with an evolving collection — shaped on site, by the people who have passed through it.

ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE

Ami Sioux & Dai Sakai — Photographer & Art Director
American photographer Ami Sioux has shot for Self Service, i-D, and Vogue Paris, and in campaigns for Hermès and Nike. She has published four photography books — including From the Road (2018) and Tokyo 35ºN (2016) — and has held solo exhibitions in Paris and Tokyo. Together with Japanese art director Dai Sakai, they spent four days documenting Bali road trips within an hour’s radius of Rumah Hujan. Shooting exclusively on 35mm film, they travelled by scooter each morning — through rice paddies, along black sand beaches, and into sacred water temples, capturing a slow, analogue perspective on Bali photography.

Arnaud Pyvka — Photographer, Filmmaker & Art Director
Paris-based photographer, filmmaker, and co-founder of Double Magazine, where he served as editor-in-chief. His work spans portraiture, reportage, and fashion — with features in British Vogue, Wallpaper, and campaigns for Céline, Hermès, and Martin Margiela. His exhibitions include La FIAC, Art Basel Miami, Frieze, and Paris Photo, alongside solo shows in Paris. He has collaborated with Acne Studios, Louis Vuitton, and Adidas, and exhibited across Europe and the United States. His debut book Les Absents was published by Hatje Cantz. For his Bali residency, he explored the island by dirt bike — often at night — documenting a more instinctive and off-grid view of Ubud and its surroundings.

Naomi Samara — Painter
Balinese painter and third-generation member of the Wawo-Runtu artistic lineage, exploring themes of connection, identity, and belonging. As the daughter and granddaughter of the founders of Jenggala — Bali’s leading ceramics atelier — she is deeply rooted in the island’s creative heritage. She is also the founder of Ghostbird + Swoon, a contemporary art space supporting emerging artists in Bali. During her residency, she worked with natural pigment inks, with three finished paintings now permanently held in the estate.

Pol Petrino — Painter & Land Artist

ARTIST-LED WORKSHOPS

Every workshop at Rumah Hujan reserves half its places for children from the village of Lungsiakan, in which the estate sits — who participate for free. Guest children are invited to donate to a charity of each artist’s choice, supporting local initiatives and community-led projects in Bali.

Made Griyawan — Batuan Painting Workshop
Traditional Balinese painter of the Batuan school — a historic village founded by artists over a thousand years ago and central to Bali’s artistic heritage. Made led the estate’s first children’s painting workshop in traditional Batuan style, teaching local village children and visiting guests side by side. His charity of choice was Studio Gelombang, his own art school supporting young Balinese artists.

Crafting Coral / Sara Howard — Coral Propagation Through Pottery
British ceramicist Sara Howard founded Crafting Coral, an NGO working across Bali, Lombok, and the Maldives, focused on marine conservation through art and education. During the workshop, children created ceramic vessels at the estate, later using them to plant coral during a guided scuba session in Sanur — connecting creativity with environmental restoration in Bali’s coastal ecosystems.

Liina Klauss — Circular Design & Found Materials
Bali-based German artist known for large-scale environmental installations presented at international festivals and sustainability forums across South-East Asia.
