Christmas in Bali 2026: A Private Villa Christmas in Ubud

Christmas in Bali does not look like Christmas anywhere else. There is no snow, no cold, and the island itself is Hindu. Christmas Day arrives at around 30 degrees, with frangipani instead of fir trees.

For some people that is reason enough to go. For others it raises a practical question: if the island does not really do Christmas, what are you actually booking?

This guide answers that. What happens in Bali on 25 December, what the weather does, how Ubud differs from the south, and what a Christmas spent in a private villa looks like.

Does Bali Celebrate Christmas?

Yes, but not in the way you might expect.

Indonesia is the world’s largest Muslim majority country, and Bali itself is around 85 percent Hindu. Even so, Christmas Day is a national public holiday across the whole of Indonesia, including Bali.

In 2026 that means:

Date Status
Thursday 24 December 2026 Christmas Eve, national collective leave day
Friday 25 December 2026 Christmas Day, national public holiday

In practice, banks and government offices close. Shops, restaurants, warungs and tourist attractions stay open, because late December is one of the busiest weeks of the Balinese year. Hotels and villas decorate, hotel lobbies play carols, and restaurants run Christmas menus. Bali’s small Christian community holds services in Denpasar and in a few churches in the tourist areas.

So Christmas in Bali is real, visible and comfortable to celebrate. It simply sits on top of ordinary island life rather than shutting it down.

Bali Weather at Christmas

December sits inside the wet season, and this is the single most misunderstood thing about Christmas in Bali.

The wet season does not mean constant rain. It usually means hot, humid mornings, a heavy downpour in the afternoon lasting an hour or two, then a clear evening. Most days still give you a long dry stretch for the pool, the beach or a walk.

What to expect December in Bali
Daytime temperature Around 27 to 32 degrees
Rain pattern Short heavy afternoon showers, mostly clearing by evening
Humidity High, noticeably more so than July
Sea and pool Warm all day
Landscape The greenest point of the year

Ubud benefits more from this than the coast. The rice terraces, the river valleys and the Campuhan ridge are at their fullest and greenest in December, and the air inland is a few degrees cooler in the evening than it is in Seminyak.

Christmas in Ubud Compared With the South

Both work. They give you very different holidays.

Ubud Seminyak, Canggu and the south
Atmosphere Quiet, green, inland river valleys Beach clubs, bars, sunset crowds
Christmas Day Villa based, family led Large hotel buffets and beach club events
Traffic in late December Busy in the centre, calm once off the main road Heaviest period of the year
Evenings Cooler, early nights Late and loud
Best for Families, multi generational groups, anyone wanting rest Couples and groups who want the party

If the point of your Christmas is to actually sit down with the people you travelled with, Ubud is the easier choice.

What to Do Around Christmas in Ubud

Late December suits a slow itinerary. A few things worth building the week around:

  • Campuhan Ridge Walk in the early morning, before the heat and before the afternoon rain

  • Tegallalang and Tegenungan for rice terraces and waterfalls, both at their fullest in the wet season

  • Ubud Art Market and the galleries on Jalan Raya Sanggingan, good for last minute gifts

  • A Balinese dance performance in the evening, which children usually find more interesting than adults expect

  • A temple ceremony, if one falls during your stay, since odalan temple anniversaries happen on a 210 day cycle and are always going on somewhere

For more, see the estate’s local recommendations.

One date worth knowing if you are staying into the new year: Galungan falls on 13 January 2027, with Kuningan on 23 January 2027. During those ten days every street in Bali is lined with penjor, the tall curved bamboo poles. It is the most visually striking period of the Balinese calendar.

Christmas Lunch, Cooked at the Villa

Christmas lunch in Bali usually means booking a hotel buffet months in advance, paying a holiday premium, and eating on someone else’s schedule.

The alternative in a private villa is simply to tell the cooks what you want.

At Rumah Hujan the in house cooks shop daily at the local markets for whatever is in season, then serve family style at the dining table overlooking the valley. The repertoire runs from traditional Balinese and Asian dishes to family recipes from the Dolomites, with fresh fish, organic chicken from Wanaprasta farm in the Balinese forests, and gelato from Gaya in Ubud.

That makes a Christmas menu straightforward to arrange. A long Italian lunch, a Balinese feast, a children’s table that eats earlier, or all three on different days. You can see the kitchen and dining approach here.

Practical note: if you want a specific Christmas menu, tell the team at least a week ahead. Some ingredients have to be ordered in.

Where to Stay: Rumah Hujan and Rumah Senja

A Simple Plan for 30 October to 2 November

Rumah Hujan Estate is a private two villa estate about 2.5 km from Ubud centre, set back from the main road, with 2,400 sqm of jungle gardens looking across the Wos river towards Campuhan Ridge. It is a home rather than a hotel, which matters more at Christmas than at any other time of year.

Space Details
Rumah Hujan villa 300 sqm, 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms
Rumah Senja villa 375 sqm, 3 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms
Badminton pavilion 200 sqm, bamboo roof created with Studio Jenquel and Ibuku
Pools 2 heated, mild saltwater pools, 12 to 13 m by 4 m
Grounds 2,400 sqm of jungle gardens facing Campuhan Ridge

Choosing between the two. Rumah Hujan is the more enclosed and sheltered of the two villas, which suits families with younger children and makes the wet season afternoons easy. Rumah Senja is larger, with a fourth bathroom and a more open plan towards the valley, so the main living space becomes the centre of the day. That open layout is the reason it tends to be the one chosen for Christmas itself, when everybody ends up in one room anyway.

Taking both. Over Christmas most groups book the whole estate. That gives you six bedrooms, two heated pools and the pavilion as a single private property, with enough separation between the two houses that grandparents, parents and children are not on top of each other.

A full time team of housekeepers, private cooks and security looks after the estate. Drivers, massage therapists, yoga and swimming instructors, badminton coaches and nannies are arranged through the services team, which removes most of the logistics that usually make family Christmases exhausting.

Six Practical Tips for Christmas in Bali

  1. Book early. Large villas in Ubud fill for the 22 December to 2 January window well before December, and minimum stays apply.

  2. Check your passport and entry requirements, including Indonesia’s visa on arrival and the Bali tourist levy.

  3. Arrange airport transfers in advance. Late December is the heaviest traffic period of the year, and the drive from the airport to Ubud takes longer than the map suggests.

  4. Plan mornings, leave afternoons loose. Rain usually arrives after lunch.

  5. Pack a light layer. Ubud evenings are cooler than the coast, and the valley air drops a few degrees after rain.

  6. Tell the villa your Christmas menu early, along with any allergies, children’s preferences and birthday or anniversary dates.

Plan Your Christmas in Ubud

Christmas in Bali works best when you stop trying to recreate the version you left at home. Warm rain, green valleys, a long lunch that nobody has to cook or clean up after, and six bedrooms for the people you actually want around the table.
